On the evening of September 27 ,the lights of shops in the Erma Road Historic and Cultural Block of Yichang,Hubei Province gradually lit up.Citizens and tourists strolled through the century-old commercial buildings, experiencing the authentic urban night life that best represents Yichang.

The Erma Road Historic and Cultural Block is among the first provincial-level historic and cultural districts in Hubei. It preserves consulates, foreign firms, and former customs sites as cultural relics.Through the urban renewal project, six cultural relics and more than50historic buildings have been protected and restored, while cultural creativity and leisure industries have been integrated into the area. This has transformed it into a new landmark for cultural tourism in Yichang and a popular destination.According to the block’s operating department, the site has so far attracted nearly one million offline visits.

“The renewal of Erma Road is not just about appearances,”said Chen Zhengqing,Party Secretary of the Erma Road Community and Director of the Residents’Committee. He explained that the urban renewal project has renovated old residential compounds and buildings within the block, comprehensively upgrading water, electricity, gas, telecommunications, and roads,as well as public services such as parking and charging facilities, shifting towards greater practicality and convenience.

For residents, the meaning of urban renewal is tangible and direct.“The wooden windows and security grilles that we had used for over twenty years were replaced with double-glazed windows. Now my old ground-floor apartment is bright and airy,”said Zhao Heng,a resident of Hongxing Road Community. He added that the residential building now has new windows, freshly painted walls, and resurfaced roads.Smart access controls, street lamps, and surveillance cameras have also been installed,“making comfort and safety comparable to that of brand-new neighborhoods.”

By improving both the“facade”and the“core,”Erma Road has become a vivid example of Yichang’s efforts in urban renewal—preserving cultural heritage, enhancing governance, and invigorating the city.

In recent years,Yichang has revitalized old neighborhoods by upgrading functionality, improving the environment, enhancing infrastructure, and encouraging community participation, thereby injecting modern vitality and sustainability into the old blocks.Old residential compounds, historic streets, and former factory sites have been transformed into livable,business-friendly,and tourist-friendly spaces.Backstreets and alleys have become leisure spots, cultural heritage spaces, and social media hotspots.Vacant plots of land have been turned into small yet beautiful“pocket parks,”allowing residents to feel the city’s warmth in the smallest details.

According to the Yichang Housing and Urban Renewal Bureau,in2024the city renovated311old residential communities, significantly improving the living conditions and quality of life for66,100households.This year,Yichang plans to renovate127old communities and2,377households in urban villages, rejuvenating the city’s appearance and adding to the happiness of residents’lives.
